MEDIA RELEASE - CHIPPENDALE TO FEAST ON ART, FOOD & CULTURE
FOOD FOR THE FUTURE FAIR TO FEAST ON ART, FOOD & CULTURE
The small, inner-city suburb of Chippendale will throw open its doors in October to showcase the art, food and culture hidden amongst its laneways and terraced houses.
The second annual Chippendale Food for the Future Fair will be held on Saturday 24 October and feature art and gardening workshops, fresh produce stalls by local growers, tours of local galleries and entertainment for the whole family.
One of the highlights of the Fair will be the launch of the Chippendale Fresh Food Cooperative in Kensington Street, which will open next door to local artists’ residency FraserStudios and sell predominantly locally-grown produce to promote the importance of sustainable sources of food.
Founding Director of the Fresh Food Co-operative Lindsay Charles says she is looking forward to working with the neighbouring artists to promote Chippendale as a cultural hotspot and to highlight the sustainable initiatives taking place throughout the suburb.
Local sustainability expert Michael Mobbs agrees, saying the Cooperative will only strengthen other initiatives already underway in the green suburb.
The local community has put a huge effort into making the suburb more sustainable, and we will continue to do so by growing edible plants across Chippendale wherever local residents and businesses want them.
‘The plan is to make Chippendale into an urban farm by having food available where we live and work and growing vines on otherwise hot empty walls.
'The Food for the Future Fair will draw on these themes and really show Sydney what the local Chippendale community has to offer.'
Local talent including the Julian Kuo Quintet will perform on the day and there will be workshops by Inner West artist Johnny Romeo and News Ltd cartoonist Eric Lobbecke.
